Day 203: A lazy Airstream day at Lake Cahuilla County Park Campground.

Being here near Palm Springs feels like we are already home. This is one of our go-to places for a getaway while we are home based and even though we are still technically full-timing across the country, it definitely feels like our trip is all but over. Officially, it will be in a couple of days but it is hard for us to make that distinction. We still won’t have a house to move into for a couple of weeks but we will be sleeping under a roof supported by walls sitting on a concrete foundation at Marlene’s parents house.

Modernism Week 2012 in Palm Springs, CA.

In 2 weeks, the annual Modernism Week event will be back at Palm Springs along with the vintage trailer show. Our visit last year got us up close and personal to some of the most amazing vintage trailers we have ever seen. With the baby due in just 3 months, we need to get a good week of camping in before things get really hectic. So we did it, we booked 7 nights at our favorite campground in the Coachella Valley, Lake Cahuilla County Park.

Our Favorite Camping Spots in Southern California.

We have been asked a few times about nice places to camp in southern California. We spent a lot of time on the road so we actually don’t have a ton of experience locally. That said, we do have some  favorite spots we’d like to share from this part of the country. Some of these places we regularly visit while others we have only been once or twice. Nonetheless, we can not wait to go again whenever we get a chance. Here is a run down of a few of our favorite local camping spots.

(Yes, these are Yoda’s favorites too. )

Palm Springs Modernism Week 2011.

When Mila was just a month old, we took her on her first camping trip to a little county park we found in the city of La Quinta, CA called Lake Cahuilla County Park. It was one of the make-or-break tests that we needed to confirm before we felt comfortable for our 4-month long cross country trip. It worked out great and Mila was a natural in the Airstream.

Early Fall at La Quinta, CA.

During our last trip to Palm Springs, we were surprised at how the local public swimming holes were all out of commission for the season. Being that it was still in the low to mid 90s, we were on a mission to take a dip somewhere.

Lucky for us, our friend Nicole, who was camping with us for the first couple of days on this trip, had a nice little plan for us. Her parents Ray and Verna, recent retirees, decided to get themselves a room at the near by La Quinta Resort & Club for a night.
