So you know how we are trying to stay on “California time” on this trip? Well, this little guy has other plans. He likes the Eastern time zone just fine and has been waking up around 6:45 am. Maybe he heard all the other campers talking crap about the lazy Californians who barley make it out of the campground by 11am on a good day. You can’t call us lazy anymore!!
Last night we met up with an Airstreamer whom we have been friends with online for some time. Casey and his family live just a bit north of here in St. Simon Island, Georgia. We have been talking about meeting up when we made our way out here and he was able to make it out to Huguenot with us for a couple of nights as he pulled in after dark with his beautifully polished 34 foot Airstream Limited.
Today is our last full day in Savannah and there is one thing left on our must do list before we leave tomorrow morning. And that is to eat at my favorite restaurant in all of the land… Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room!!! Kyle has never been there (gasp!) so we told that he must join us or else.
Since we got lucky with a last minute reservations at Fort Wilderness in Disney World, our time in Savannah is unfortunately cut short to just 4 days. That might sound like a decent amount of time to be in a city, and it usually is, but we love Savannah so much that we originally planned on being here for at least a week. Well, what are you gonna do? You win some and you lose some. I doubt anyone will be sympathetic for us for having to leave Savannah because we have to go to Disney World.
Last night we had a visit from the tooth fairy for Ava’s first tooth. She made a special request to see if she would leave her tooth. When we woke up this morning, her tooth was still there in the mini treasure box, there was a gold dollar and a special note from the tooth fairy.
This morning the girls received some very good news. We are heading down to Savannah tomorrow after our stay here in Charleston. Although Savannah is Marlene’s favorite city from our last trip, that is not the news that got Ava so excited. This morning, we officially reserved 4 nights at Fort Wilderness in Walt Disney World and booked our tickets for the Magic Kingdom.
We made the decision to not drive all the way to Asheville last night so we can enjoy a leisurely drive through the Smokey Mountains today. It was such a beautiful drive during our last visit here and we didn’t want to do it in the dark. We woke up at the Walmart parking lot in Newport, Tennessee and headed east into North Carolina.
Today was a sad day for us all. We were going to have to say good-bye to our good friends. No more reminiscing about ice cream in Croatia. No more late night talks about sailing across the seven seas. No more jam sessions with a splash of wine. No more cupcake baking with an extra cup of flour thanks to Mila. No more bouncing travel ideas off of each other.
Our stay at the Nashville KOA has come to an end. We are glad we came here instead of skipping it even though we are pretty ready for some warmer weather. Today, we are actually not quite leaving Nashville. We have a lot of online friends who are from this area or are very familiar with it so we have a couple of places we need to check out after we hitch up and drive off.
There is a certain guilt I feel when I am revisiting a town that I have previously been to. It seems that we should be trying harder to see new places during these trips but we just can’t help ourselves but to retrace our steps to try to relive something in our memory. We have done a pretty good job of visiting new places and starting today, we are going to indulge ourselves and find our way back to some of the best spots from our last trip.
This morning we woke up to overcast skies and light but persistent rain. Last night we came to Lexington and met up with Doug and his family of Troutstream who hosted us at their home a couple of weeks ago in Ohio. When we left, we had made tentative plans to meet up again in Kentucky to do some Kentucky trail hiking: The Bourbon Trail.
Today is our last day at Carrie’s house. We’ve been living large for the past 10 days and it is time to hit the road again. The girls are sad that they have to leave their buddy. “We just got here!”, they screamed. We told them that Carrie will join us for a few more days on the road but they know that this part of our trip is coming to an end.
