After two years of living in our van, we finally put together a tour of our home. We built it out ourselves for $15k in about 40 days. Come join us for our YouTube Premier today (September 1st 2020) at 11pm CET (2pm PST). During the premiere, we will be online chatting and answering any questions you might have about our van build. Hope to see you there!

Amazing! Wish I was brave enough to do this. Ok you showed a chair at the end of the van your that was folded up. Is it for kids or adults? If it’s for kids can you share your Amazon link? The link I saw looked like an adult chair

Really love your van build. Can you tell me what size the rims and tires are? Thanks Gary

thank you. They are the stock wheels and the tires are also factory sized. I believe they are 275/70-R17.

Thanks so much for sharing!

We’re at the beginning of our planning process. Can I ask you two quite personal questions? (Tell me to jump off a cliff, if you wish!)
1. I’m in favour of a toilet system like you have and I’m sure my kids would be cool with it. Hubby unhappy with lack of privacy and would prefer a separate “room” (which I can’t find space for without sacrificing something critical). From a practical point of view, how do you facilitate it when someone needs to do a #2? Does everyone just hop out of the van to give that person some space? Are you just used to doing it in front of each other (it just eventually becomes normal)? Some other option?
2. You don’t have to quote exact figures, but I’m just wondering what the ballpark cost is to transport the van cross-Atlantic? We live in England but my folks live in America. I work in a school so have the summers off. Depending on cost it would be phenoms to be able to take our van with us over the summer so we can visit the grandparents but also do a bit of travelling. But my gut tells me that would be cost prohibitive for ‘short’ trips like that.

On a side note, thank you SO MUCH explaining the good and the less good…. but especially for the hint about keeping it under 7m due to ferry costs, etc. That’s been something on my list to research.

    Hi Lisa,

If someone needs to go #2, we all hop outside (if we aren’t already hanging out outside). We pee in front of each other. Boys sit down. It was a little strange at first but we ends up being normal, just all the other little things that are a little different from static life to van life.

In regards to cost of shipping, it cost us about $2500. We have a whole blog post of the details: https://malimish.com/blog/2018/10/28/how-we-shipped-our-van-from-us-to-europe/

Thanks so much for watching our video and commenting. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Follow up about the toilet – about how many days can you go before you have to empty it?
