2012 Tour of America

Day 12: Fruita Community Recreation Center.

This morning we took a little trip into Grand Junction. Fruita is a small town about 10 miles west of it and there are lots more shopping and service options there. We are headed east on I-70 over the Rockies on Saturday and Marlene has been fretting the drive over the Rockies. We wanted to be as prepared as we can so off to the brake shop we go to get them checked out.

Day 11: Fruita, Utah to Fruita, Colorado.

I’m not sure how we ended up in two different cities of Fruita on this trip, but we did. Not only did we never hear of either Fruita before this trip but we ended up being in both of them on the same exact day. Oh by the way, this is Marlene on the blog today. Dan made me pipe up.

Day 10: Colorado bound via Arches National Park.

Our time at Capitol Reef National Park has come to an end.  Tomorrow is Monday and I have pushed off my work obligations as long as I can without causing any serious pain for myself and others. It has been an awesome and unexpected experience as we knew very little about it prior to our arrival.

Day 9: Petroglyphs, Old Schoolhouse and the Fruita Orchards.

Today is our only full day here in Capitol Reef and we have a full agenda. Yesterday we completed the girls Junior Ranger program and got their badges so today we can just have fun and do some exploring.

Day 8: Fruita, Utah and Capitol Reef National Park.

Our night at Wonderland RV Park was brief. In a more populated area, we would have found a place to boondock instead. But since our 3G card doesn’t work real well, we opted to pay for the night since they promised a great wifi connection. Well, the connection was less than great up until about 11PM. Once everyone went to bed, I was able to take better advantage of it.

Day 7: Climbing the Summit through Utah’s Scenic Byway 12.

Last night’s drive-in really pooped the girls out. They were so into the Looney Tunes, they stayed up through the whole movie and slept in until almost 10am.

Day 6: Another day in Escalante and another night at the Drive-In.

Our only full day here at Shooting Star Drive-In started with a visit to the park office to use their Internet so we can take care of some business. Mark, the owner of the resort, graciously let us take over the gift area for a couple hours while we got re-acquainted with the outside world.

Day 5: Shooting Star Drive-In and Airstream Park at Escalante, Utah.

Our 3-day stay at the Hitch N Post Campground has come to an end. This campground is a simple but charming little place. The owner of the campground had just taken ownership back in March of 2012 and as according to Marlene, “He might be the nicest person in the world.”

Day 4: Our Junior Ranger at Bryce Canyon National Park.

We got a fairly early start this morning considering both of us went to bed well after midnight. I actually only got about 3 hours of sleep but I am not going to let that get in the way of our big plans today. Our destination today is Bryce Canyon National Park about 20 miles up the road from us.

Day 3: Thunderstorms and Ice Cream in Panguitch, Utah.

It was nice to wake up at a full hookup campground and we are starting to settle into our groove. The kids got to watch some movies in the morning while we got breakfast ready. On the agenda today, not much.

Day 2: Leaving Cedar City with a new set of tires.

Last night we boondocked at a Walmart at the edge of Cedar City, Utah. It was a great feeling to finally have some relief from the heat. At 5,800 feet, the outside temperature dropped into the 50s just before sunrise. It was so nice to be back in the Mish again and everyone slept in.

To Las Vegas and Beyond!

The day has finally come for us to leave California. We have been ‘free-loading’  at Marlene’s parents’ house since we sold and moved away from our last home. Almost 40 days later, we have tied up all loose ends and prepared one last BBQ before heading out.
