We are back in Boca Raton visiting our old friend Paul. We have known Paul for almost 15 years. We met him when we were renting a house in Santa Barbara after we graduated college and needed a roommate. We have been friends ever since. He moved to Florida a few years ago and we make sure to pay him a visit when we are here.
Our last visit here we parked at the same spot on his driveway. This time, I am a lot better at backing up and barely needed any help to tuck into this spot. This is also the place where we left Yoda and took a flight home for Easter in 2010 for a week. The Mish was parked here for so long that his HOA sent him a nasty letter asking him to move that hunk of junk.
As soon as we got to Florida, we were presented with the expected warm and humid weather which means bugs. When we were driving through South Dakota and Minnesota, we had to deal with flies buzzing around every time we opened the door. This time, it’s mosquitoes, noseeums adn they bite.
We have been doing some last minute booking on Reserve America for campgrounds in the Florida Keys. The 4 Florida state parks in the keys are really difficult to get reservations for if you don’t do it months ahead of time. It will let you reserve as far ahead as 11 months and being that winter is their high season, everything was booked solid. Our last trip there, we started looking for keys reservations while we were still in Louisiana.
This time around, we got really lucky with some last minute cancellations from other people and we were able to get into Bahia Honda for 5 days at a waterfront site. We jumped on it right away which means we are only going to be here for one more night. The plan is to spend Christmas and New Years in the keys so that means we will need to find campsite for just about 25 nights.
For lunch, we went to grab a quick bite at the Five Guys. Normally, a trip to Five Guys isn’t necessarily blog worthy. The burgers are good but in my mind, they don’t really compare to some of the bests.
What is significant today is that we finally found the right combination of ingredients that hits the spot for Ava. Usually she does not really like burgers and for some reason, she is no longer into melted cheese so a grilled cheese is out of the question. When we were back in Asheville, we had lunch with Frank and Debbie from StreamingTogether at a Fudruckers. Ava got to assemble her own burger from their condiment bar. The magic combination for her is actually very simple: mayo and tomatoes. She likes it simple and ate the whole thing.
Since we are only here for one day, the kids wanted to get some time to play with Paul’s little ones. When we were here last time, Paul only had one boy, Ethan, and he was barely a year old. Both Ethan and Mila were way too little for Ava to play with at the time.
This time around, it is game on. Ethan is now 3 years old. The 3 kids got along great and had a blast hanging out with each other.
Luka is the odd man out this time but give him a couple of years, he will be back and ready to rock.
over and out,
dan
