Mila decided that her first day in Kentucky was worthy of a new milestone. We haven’t boondocked since before Jackson Center and this morning, we woke up in the parking lot of the Walmart in Georgetown, Kentucky. It is warm and beautiful here and we let the girls do some arts and crafts before packing up and heading to Lexington. Just as we are cleaning up, we noticed about 3 inches of baby curls on the dinette table.

Mila has these big round curls at the ends of her hair which we love. In all these last three years, we have not been able to bring ourselves up to cutting those off. This morning Mila decided that today would be her first unofficial haircut and she would take a stab at doing it herself.

A few miles down the road is Lexington, Kentucky. We had not planned on visiting Lexington yet but since we were a day early for Louisville, we decided to come and scope out the Kentucky Horse Park.

Although the park is owned by the state of Kentucky, it isn’t run by the state park system. It is a one-of-a-kind park with nearly 300 campsites and a huge 1,200 acre equestrian facility. It is designed as a working horse farm as well as educational complex that is open to the public. There are daily horse parades showing the different breeds of horses from thoroughbred racing horses to standard breeds.

We got here in the afternoon and decided to skip our visit to the horse farm. We will hope to make a day trip back here during our stay in Louisville to see it.

The campground offers just water and electricity. There are also electric only sites but no full hookups are available. There are lots of spaces available but it is booked full for the following weekend since they are hosting a harvest festival event.

Since Luka turned 6-months old, he started eating baby food. He is also getting the hang of this sitting in a chair business. The Mish is going to start to feel even smaller once he starts to crawl which is probably very, very soon.

We took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to do some activities outside. We were able to get back into our summer clothing for the next few days after getting into our winter clothes since Minnesota.

Our autumn chasing mission is so far working spectacularly. Here in Kentucky, there are a lot of trees with its leaves still on them.

Scooting thru a tunnel of trees.

I would imagine scenes like this are few and far between up in northern Michigan by now.

Soon, every tree here will look like this one, too.

Tomorrow, we are going to drive west towards Louisville. It will be one of the first westward legs of our trip since we left California 3 months ago. But do not worry, we won’t be going west for long. There are still many more thousands of miles of road left before we start thinking about home.

over and out,

Sorry you didn’t have an opportunity to visit the International Horse Museum. It’s fascinating to see how long man and horse have been working side by side. The museum includes a bronze on Secretariat and a few other well known horses, and has been a burial ground for many. While there, a groom pulled out a couple of beautiful race horses, or horses from race horse lines, and those incredible creatures towered over me, so huge and beautiful!

We will definitely be going back for the museum before we leave the area. It was just a quick stay this time around to burn some time and scope out the joint 🙂 Plus there are much too many bourbon distilleries around here to not come back.
