Last year we spent just about half of our nights in the Airstream. 4 months of them being continuously on the road when we traveled cross country and the rest of them were mostly week-long trips at nearby campgrounds. You know the old cliché, “Time flies when you are having fun.” I guess that is true to a certain extent. Time definitely crawls when you are waiting in line at the DMV or in a Wal-Mart checkout line on a Sunday afternoon. But, when we are at home, the days and weeks seem to be just carbon copies of each other. The mundane routines and household chores take up so much time that we wouldn’t even notice when suddenly several months have flown by. That is what the first half of 2011 have been like.
Is this kid bored or what?
We thought long and hard about taking another trip cross country but ultimately decided against it. At least for now. We have a few more months before the weather turns nasty so don’t count us out just yet. What we decided to do instead is to spend a couple of months going to some places a little bit further. Far enough away so that the Airstream and the cat unfortunately could not come along. For some of our readers who have read the ‘About Us‘ section might remember that the title of our blog ‘Mali Mish’ means ‘Little Mouse’ in Croatian. That’s because Marlene’s family is from Croatia. Pretty much everyone in her family makes it back to the home land once every year or two. It had been almost three years since we last visited so it was our time to go. As Mila is about to turn two, we would lose the opportunity for her to get a free round-trip flight on her mama’s lap if we waited. So it was settled, we planned and booked a 2-month trip around the other side of the world sans our beloved Airstream, the Mali Mish.
A slightly smaller Mali Mish family minus the Airstream, cat and children circa 2004. But check out the size of that camera!
We spent the first week in France and the rest of the time traveling and living along the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Marlene’s family has an old house on one of the islands in the Adriatic and her parents recently bought a small apartment in the city of Split. Some of her cousins still live there and through them we have met and kept several close friends of ours in the area. At the moment we are considering Costa Rica tours.
Our last night in Split with friends from our trip in 2008. Ava was just one. Three months after this photo we would become proud owners of an Airstream. Yeah, that is Marlene behind my big head.
Even though this is not an Airstream-related adventure, we wanted to share it on our blog as it might give some of you a glimpse into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe that is not yet popular amongst Americans. Stay tuned for the next several posts as we take you along with us on a little adventure across the Atlantic and to one of the most beautiful coasts of the Mediterranean sea.
