{"id":9055,"date":"2017-06-14T16:23:12","date_gmt":"2017-06-14T23:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malimish.com\/blog\/?p=9055"},"modified":"2019-12-10T07:09:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T15:09:25","slug":"boondocking-mono-lake-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malimish.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/14\/boondocking-mono-lake-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Boondocking at Mono Lake, California."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34466141110\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4267\/34466141110_b9ae7864f8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After Mammoth and June Lake, we decided to creep further north up the 395 and spend some time on the <a href=\"https:\/\/freelyroaming.com\/12-essential-products-for-the-rv-boondocking-pro\/\">BLM land<\/a> surrounding\u00a0Mono Lake. We&#8217;ve visited Mono Lake several times since living on the road but have never actually camped there. There is one large camp spot that has gained popularity over the years and guess what? It was taken. Which I guess isn&#8217;t very surprising given the popularity of the area.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34720452901\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4243\/34720452901_42765e47c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So we went <a href=\"https:\/\/freelyroaming.com\/12-essential-products-for-the-rv-boondocking-pro\/\">scouting for a spot on the surrounding BLM land<\/a>. Our friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/meantforadventure\">Tori and Skyler from @meantforadventure<\/a>\u00a0actually found a spot that would accommodate both of our rigs. The dirt road to get there was tight, real tight but we didn&#8217;t have much trouble getting into our site since our Casita trailer is narrower than our truck. Just had a take it slow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34720456271\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4219\/34720456271_39ce3cc03e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Luka happy to share his treats with me after we set up camp.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34009524184\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4199\/34009524184_c3a6110746_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe we should check on our friends?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34042347393\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4223\/34042347393_184f515c13_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not sure how they did it, but they fit their vintage 31 foot Airstream into this spot after some fancy maneuvering.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34720454661\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4269\/34720454661_97b50096a5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We all got some new pinstripes thanks to the high desert bushes that lined the dirt road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34720454851\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4276\/34720454851_184f515c13_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is no way we would have fit into these spots with a newer wide body Airstream.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34689241472\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4250\/34689241472_3dc19a04f5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually, a ranger showed up a couple days later and informed us we were really not supposed to be down in this area at all. Oops. They said we could actually stay a couple more nights but not to tell anyone about this spot in the future. So SHHHHH.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34689240272\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4195\/34689240272_9cea91cb9a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The kids have been asking for the camera so look&#8230; I&#8217;m in a shot. Too bad it&#8217;s not allowed. Actually we stopped here 3 times this week. Yes, we like it that much.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34720449621\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4204\/34720449621_61d588355a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We said we were going to take things slow, real slow, up the 395 highway.\u00a0I would say that we accomplished that for our type of travel but I&#8217;m sure some of you are laughing. We tried our best. Three weeks is a loooooong time for us.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"34009515334\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4276\/34009515334_072fd7c5e2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blog Mono Lake\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our next stop was Washoe Lake campground near Reno, Nevada. We were actually here 3 years ago (the old blog post is <a href=\"http:\/\/malimish.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/04\/june-lake-ca-to-washoe-state-park-nv-to-susanville-ca\/\">here<\/a>).
