We heard that it was a date palm oasis in the middle of the desert but were pleasantly surprised to also find an old church and square when we pulled into town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1665\/24640710092_15042cb263_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The stunning Mission San Ignacio was founded in 1728\u00a0by Juan Bautista Luyando.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1512\/24389129289_80d88f8575_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a huge sucker for old churches and graveyards, well&#8230; anything old really, so we took a quick stroll through the mission and its grounds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1539\/24390753699_434a92b1f5_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The old lumber, the peeling paint, the faded statues, the stone floors, the smell of the concrete walls. I love it all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1588\/24757868865_4f849265c2_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opposite of the mission sits a square that the center of town surrounds. The kids immediately got down to the business of playing tag on the slippery tile.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1619\/24131604883_7a46a739e1_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1445\/24130283134_02ffdb67c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1591\/24128609154_1d642a779a_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for one of many stray pups of Baja to join in on the fun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1714\/24663254291_f77bc2f504_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Luka wipes everyone&#8217;s kisses. Mine included.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1640\/24758430415_b21d0f6f40_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The kids insisted that there was one thing missing from the town&#8217;s square. Gargoyles! So here was their best impression.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1642\/24640617572_134b0c0865_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After our visit in town, we drove down the road a bit to settle into a campground for the evening.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1558\/24757824825_ce51d7f61b_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We ended up at Camp Los Petates. We found a spot right on the water, looking at a date palm oasis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1593\/24129142654_3897474475_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1603\/24663803241_392b38bf30_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The kids immediately found bamboo fishing poles and tried to catch us some dinner.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1651\/24640043672_9ef35874a9_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hey, Mila! What&#8217;s so funny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1522\/24731509676_423ee0258e_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, those American Coots are pretty funny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1536\/24757704075_e73db8ede6_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main part of the campground was pretty packed with campers by the time we arrived.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1527\/24389653059_2bd81451ae_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We ended up setting up shop closer\u00a0to the road since there was an empty spot at that end of the campground. The road noise ended up being a non-issue since the town is pretty small and most people prefer to not drive at night.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1509\/24461484170_04aa2c34a6_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1712\/24130207713_f05d42f9d7_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1672\/24757312145_1bae742a9b_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>San Ignacio ended up being a one night stop for us since Dan had a week off and we wanted to see as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1471\/24730830656_14b9fb8960_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before we left town, we ended up at campground\/hotel\/reastaurant called Rice &amp; Beans in order for our friend Nathan to pick up a package he had shipped. Ends up that getting mail shipped to Baja is pretty unreliable so he had to get it rerouted to another town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1672\/24130369524_365ee5687a_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took advantage of their amenities though. The kids soaked their little toes in a freezing pool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1495\/24463034290_7fcf68c659_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also grabbed a bite to eat at their restaurant. Next time order your own chilaquiles.
