After a lot of research, we decided that it was not meant to be this time around. We found questionable cell reception at the campgrounds and the trip would likely have added several days to our visit. After all, we are not on vacation, this is our real day-to-day life and sacrifices are the norm.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0307 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15001248281\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3896\/15001248281_ba82831dc1.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0307\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We ended up driving towards Boise and stopped near the Oregon\/Idaho border for a little break at Farewell Bend State Park.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0310 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14981362446\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3911\/14981362446_890206b3d9.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0310\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally we planned to stay the night here before pushing on but a drive through the campground found us not very impressed with what sites they had available.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0320 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15001260491\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3900\/15001260491_927d31c650.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0320\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So instead of setting camp, we just parked for a couple of hours for a break while I got some work done.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0331 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004376895\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5560\/15004376895_b2dcf54bf0.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0331\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The water here had an amazingly clear\u00a0reflection against the clouds and hills on the other side. Had it not been for the mosquitoes around the water, we would have loved to stick around longer.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0343 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817733920\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5557\/14817733920_c27aa06fae.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0343\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We got back in the car and kept our caravan moving until we got to yet another Elks Lodge in Boise. This is our third time staying at an Elks and the first time that we are bringing a guest with us.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0345 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004394235\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5552\/15004394235_12d44a4cd8.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0345\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Elks Lodge here is just a big gravel lot that is fenced in at the corner of their property that is about an acre large.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0359 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004411735\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3897\/15004411735_fc1a78648f.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0359\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our exploration of Boise started with a trip to the Old Idaho State Penitentiary.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0365 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817709439\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3919\/14817709439_22474d050c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0365\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This prison ran for 101 years with its last inmates leaving in 1973.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0371 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004054402\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3884\/15004054402_acb7d9f8f4.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0371\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During that time, more than 13,000 people came through the system.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0388 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004460735\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3841\/15004460735_60715dc71d.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0388\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the creepiest places here is the gallows. This is directly under the drop floor as a death row inmate would be executed by hanging. There was something unexplainable about the stillness in the air during our visit.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0405 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817838860\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5580\/14817838860_5148a74aee.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0405\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another spot was nicknamed &#8216;Siberia&#8217; by the inmates who came through here. It is in the far corner of the facility where solitary confinement terms are served for extended periods of time when the prisoners may not see sunlight for many days in a row.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0394 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15001365521\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5557\/15001365521_0d3abf5305.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0394\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While in Boise, we got a\u00a0message from another traveling family on Instagram that they were in town. We planned to meet up while we were out. Since we enjoyed 10 Barrel Brewery so much in Bend, Oregon, we decided to stop at one of their other locations here in Boise to meet Lee, Nicole and their baby girl Jolene.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0422 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817862260\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5589\/14817862260_1f327a57b0.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0422\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They were a really sweet family and it turns out that they had lived in Ventura for many years and had been at a lot of the same places that we use to frequent when we were still living there. We told them about our accommodations at the Elks Lodge and said that it would not be a problem for us to bring another guest to the campground so we can spend some more time with them.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0436 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818013087\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5580\/14818013087_8bdcd7b2df.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0436\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We knew that Lee and his family were traveling around the country to play his music. As\u00a0we don&#8217;t watch a lot of TV, we did not know that Lee was actually on a season of The Voice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z9ahdSCsYcU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to see his debut appearance on the show<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0434 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817878970\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5582\/14817878970_b0d0f3f892.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0434\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lee and Nicole go by the name <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/FreeFromMisery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@FreeFromMisery<\/a> on Instagram and they exude that moniker completely in the personality and attitude with everything they do.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0430 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817812259\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3858\/14817812259_3109edb78f.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0430\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had an amazing time hanging out with them that evening in the parking lot of the Elks.\u00a0It was not an exotic location but meeting people like them and connecting on the road is a big part of our adventures.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0445 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14817933558\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3910\/14817933558_f93775eb81.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0445\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We headed out from Boise and headed east towards Twin Falls. While it is beautiful to look at as it arches across the canyon above the Snake River, its claim to fame is actually the activity that people do on here.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0570 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004705685\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3845\/15004705685_4fee837531.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0570\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Perrine Bridge is one of the few bridges in the country where BASE jumping is allowed. On any given day, many adrenaline junkies can be seen walking along side of the bridge to the middle to get ready for flight.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0572 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004327702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3853\/15004327702_2133bd6971.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0572\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0579 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818195757\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3902\/14818195757_3d7c584756.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0579\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While here, we stayed at Rock Creek County Park. It was sort of hard to find as it sits below street level and had lots of construction going on while we were there. It had water and electric but no dump station on site.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0604 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818021829\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3915\/14818021829_3bf5af688d.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0604\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had to haul out of there to the city dump station a couple of miles away which was free.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0613 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818243327\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5557\/14818243327_93e8db5681.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0613\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we left Twin Falls, we decided to make our way to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Well, we could not just let it pass without going so we hit the brakes pretty hard and turned up a dirt road for a few miles before we ended up at the ghost town of BayHorse, Idaho.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0815 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818353999\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3871\/14818353999_e6afe1d087.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0815\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we got here, the gates were closed and locked. Apparently it had just closed a few moments ago. Bayhorse is preserved and managed by the State of Idaho as a State Park and no rangers were to be found.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0823 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15001988651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3886\/15001988651_3ec9852ba9.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0823\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, we parked outside of the gates and hiked in to get a closer look at this place.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0819 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/14818363309\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5561\/14818363309_453ac772f2.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0819\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got to fly the drone here in golden hour and got some great aerial footage of the place in 1080p at 60 frames per second.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9BaA3n6ZI6k\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIt was well worth the detour and we hoped that we had gotten here earlier to get some more information about our visit.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0832 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/15004856372\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5571\/15004856372_72f12f1a5d.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0832\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We left and got back on route 75 as it connected back to route 93 which took us south back into Arco, Idaho and eventually to our campground at Craters of the Moon.
