We were just there a couple of months ago on our way to California from Albuquerque but since Josh and Jessa had never been, we didn&#8217;t mind one bit going back again. Plus, we wanted to hit up all of those National Monuments that were closed when we drove through last time.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6761 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13080172533\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3139\/13080172533_29d8260b23.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6761\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First stop was Montezuma Castle outside of Camp Verde, Arizona. There are a ton of Puebloan ruins around here and many of them, including this one, were built by the Sinagua people. Another badge opportunity and another Sinaguan ruin.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6784 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13084799385\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7315\/13084799385_571fa525a8.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6784\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tuzigoot means crooked water in Apache. It does sit at a bend in the Verde river but it is unknown what the original occupants called this place. Tuzigoot is a named given to this site by the archaeologists that found it.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6788 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13084942143\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3787\/13084942143_57f3fc5e01.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6788\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is a pretty elaborate system of masonry rooms that wind its way to the top of a mountain in the Verde Valley. Many of the structures you see here have been reconstructed but to what they believe are the original styles and using the original materials.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6793 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085139704\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3107\/13085139704_c000ccb3d3.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6793\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the kids were getting their booklets reviewed by the ranger, Mila decided to teach the ranger a thing or two about the native people when she said, &#8220;People in the olden days are real, you know? Our first stop in Flagstaff is yet another National Monument. What did I tell you? This place is loaded!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"We were on a cliff at Walnut Canyon National Park. by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/12758289475\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2885\/12758289475_5e26474bba.jpg\" alt=\"We were on a cliff at Walnut Canyon National Park.\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is Walnut Canyon. There are cliffside dwellings that are built-in to the walls throughout the canyon. We took the island trail that took us all the way down to an island in the canyon and all the way back. I&#8217;d tell you it was easy but I would be lying. I was just doing my job as a Junior Ranger. Sunset Crater Volcanic and Wupatki.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6832 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085280454\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3014\/13085280454_67cd4e1f85.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6832\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was still a little bit of slush left from the winter and it was Luka&#8217;s first time seeing it. What is left is pretty nasty stuff but his first instinct was to grab a handful and shove it in his mouth.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6840 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085121273\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3545\/13085121273_f0d801ea0a.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6840\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, it helps to build his immune system I guess.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6848 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085146793\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2010\/13085146793_bc6b51a59d.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6848\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sunset Crater is an inactive cinder cone volcano that erupted a little less than 1000 years ago. There were definitely Singuan people already living here and its eruption forced a lot of them out of the area.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6850 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085031425\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2001\/13085031425_111d87a3cd.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6850\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sunset Crater and Wupatki are along a loop trail that you can drive around and essentially see by car but to get a closer look, you will want to get out and walk a little.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6853 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085044185\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7343\/13085044185_18c1076ff0.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6853\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After nearly 1,000 years, a lot of life has come back to this area.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6851 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085162203\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7377\/13085162203_eaf9d91d56.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6851\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the aftermath of the eruption is still very much visible.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Volcano smolcano. This is what I'm talking about! #ohluka #lukaandadodo\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we were leaving the hike at Sunset Crater, Luka screamed as we saw this backhoe loader drive up the curb on the side of the parking lot. The ranger who was operating it graciously let Luka sit on the side for a photo.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6865 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085413404\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7448\/13085413404_a4422efb37.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6865\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our final ancient Puebloan ruin today was Wupatki National Monument. This place is unique as it was a crossroad for many of the ancient people that lived in the area.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6889 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085513834\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7394\/13085513834_bcf4d0bd8c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6889\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is evidence that shows trade between the Sinaguan, Cohonina and Anasazi occurred here and even at times occupied the space together.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_6873 by Mali Mish, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/danlin\/13085134425\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7434\/13085134425_933325f615.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6873\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This area actually saw an increase in population when Sunset Crater erupted and sent volcanic ash all over the region. There was no literary gem from Mila this time around but she nailed every question the ranger threw at her.
